The Barre Center for Buddhist Studies
presents a
Bhavana Course

Satipatthana & Jhana

(Foundations of Mindfulness and Meditative Absorptions)

This course will focus on the wealth of practices outlined in the Mahasatipatthana Sutta (Digha Nikaya 22). We not only will study the traditional 21 mindfulness practices of this important sutta, but will examine the other practices also mentioned. There will be ample opportunity for students to practice the Buddha's comprehensive instructions. In addition, there will be a special emphasis on learning the Jhanas (Meditative Absorptions).

Material from additional suttas will be use to amplify the teachings of the Mahasatipatthana Sutta. In addition to carefully reading Digha Nikaya 22, students should also read (before the course begins) Digha Nikaya 2, the Samaññaphala Sutta, for a beautiful and interesting explanation of the gradual training; Majjhima Nikaya 118, the Anapanasati Sutta, for a full explanation of the practice of Mindfulness of Breathing plus a detailed discussion of the Seven Factors of Enlightenment; and Majjhima Nikaya 119, the Kayagata-sati Sutta, to see the connections of mindfulness of the body, the Jhanas and the gradual training.

This course is limited to students who have completed at least 2 one-week or longer silent retreats.
